A car exhaust system is a network of parts that channel combustion gases away from the engine and out of the vehicle. It also reduces noise and harmful emissions produced during the combustion process [1].

Here are the main parts of a car exhaust system:

• Exhaust manifold: This collects hot exhaust gases from the engine cylinders into a single pipe. It’s made of cast iron due to its ability to withstand high temperatures.
• Oxygen sensors: These sensors measure the amount of oxygen in the exhaust stream. This information is used by the engine computer to adjust the air-fuel mixture for optimal performance and emissions .
• Catalytic converter: This is a device that converts harmful pollutants in the exhaust gas, such as carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons, into less harmful substances like carbon dioxide and water vapor.
• Resonator: This reduces the high-pitched sounds produced by the exhaust gases exiting the engine .
• Muffler: This is the final component of the exhaust system and it mufflers the noise of the exhaust gases exiting the engine. It uses chambers and baffles to absorb sound waves.
• Tailpipe: This is the pipe that directs the exhaust gases out of the vehicle’s undercarriage, typically near the rear bumper.
