Car brakes are one of the most important safety features of a car. They are responsible for slowing down and stopping the car. There are two main types of car brakes: disc brakes and drum brakes.

Disc Brakes

Disc brakes are the most common type of brake on modern cars. They use a hydraulic system to apply pressure to a caliper, which then squeezes the brake pads onto a rotor. The friction created between the brake pads and the rotor slows down or stops the car.

    • Components of a disc brake system:
        • Master cylinder: This is the main pump of the hydraulic system. When you press the brake pedal, the master cylinder pushes brake fluid through the brake lines.
        • Brake lines: These are the tubes that carry brake fluid from the master cylinder to the calipers.
        • Calipers: These are the clamps that squeeze the brake pads onto the rotors.
        • Brake pads: These are the parts that make contact with the rotors. They are made of a friction material that wears down over time and needs to be replaced regularly.
        • Rotors: These are the discs that spin with the wheels. They are made of cast iron or ceramic and can get very hot when the brakes are applied.

Drum Brakes

  • Components of a drum brake system:
    • Master cylinder: This works the same way as in a disc brake system.
    • Brake lines: This works the same way as in a disc brake system.
    • Wheel cylinders: These are the cylinders that push the brake shoes outward.
    • Brake shoes: These are the parts that make contact with the drum. They are lined with a friction material that wears down over time and needs to be replaced regularly.
    • Drums: These are the rotating cylinders that are attached to the wheels.
